Asus Zenfone 3 Ultra review

What is the most suitable smartphone size? There cannot be one answer to this, but the market is slowly becoming dominated by Android smartphones with 5.5 inch displays. It is not easy to find a phone with 5 inch screen in today’s date. At the same time, phones with large displays are also being sold in the market at different prices. Recently, we reviewed the mid-range segment Lenovo Fab 2 Plus (Review) and Xiaomi Mi Max (Review). Now we are going to review the Asus Zenfone 3 Ultra of the same segment.

With an aim to blur the distinction between smartphone and tablet, Asus wants to make it your one-stop digital device with the latest launch of the device. There is no doubt that it will replace the other screens in your life. But is it made for you? We will try to know this through the review.

asus zenfone 3 ultra look and design
Before buying this device, the only question that will come in your mind is whether you can carry it with you. Dimensions 186.4×93.9×6.8mm and weighing 233 grams, this smartphone is a bit awkward. And keeping it together isn’t easy. This phone never fit our pocket. If you want to use it, then handbag and backpack must be kept nearby.

You will need both hands to use it safely. Because you can’t reach every edge of the phone with your thumb. Even balancing with one hand is not easy. Due to the width and weight, talking on this phone for a long time is tiring.

Talking about the build quality, Asus has done a great job. The Zenfone 3 Ultra is capable of challenging any premium smartphone to date. The front and back panels are completely flat. Metal bands have been used on the edges. The protection of Gorilla Glass 4 is present on the front panel. The metal edges and home button are reminiscent of Samsung’s old design setup. The good thing is that there is no boredom.

The left edge is completely empty. The same, according to convenience, the power button is given on the right edge. Two separate trays are provided. One for Nano SIM and the other for Nano-SIM or MicroSD card. The USB Type-C port is placed in the middle of the two speaker grilles at the bottom. The 3.5 mAh audio socket is on the top.

The volume buttons are on the back. Well, we don’t like this setup much. But considering the size of the phone, it is very effective. Whichever hand you use, you can easily access the volume buttons with your index finger. You will find the primary camera equipped with flash and laser autofocus on the rear.

The Zenfone 3 Ultra looks expensive, but is not very interesting or modern. The color of our review unit was silver which was a champagne color in daylight. You will get 18W charger, USB Type-C cable and ZenEar earphones with the phone.

Asus Zenfone 3 Ultra Specifications
Asus seems to have paid more attention to the external beauty of the phone. Because apart from the metal body and big screen, its specifications are the same as the mid-range smartphone on paper. It has Adreno 510 integrated for graphics with Qualcomm Snapdragon 652 processor. Inbuilt storage is 64 GB and you will also get 4 GB RAM. There is support for microSD card up to 200 GB. Apart from this, you will get 100 GB of free storage on Google Drive for two years.

The resolution of 1080×1920 pixels, to be honest, is a bit low considering the larger screen. Everything else on the screen is crisp and clean. But it would have been better if there was a panel of 1440×2560 pixels in this price.

LTE supports all Indian bands. By the way, Asus has said to have support for Voice over LTE. But we were not able to make phone call from Reliance Jio sim. When we asked Asus about it, a company representative told us that the support will be made available through an OTA update. You will also get Wi-Fi 802.11 AC, Bluetooth 4.2, GPS, GLONASS and many more sensors.

In view of such a large body, the company has given a battery of 4600 mAh. The phone supports Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 3.0. You will also be able to do reverse charge when the battery life is more than 20 percent. The sensor of the rear camera is 23 megapixels. It is equipped with optical image stabilization for photographs and electronic stabilization for videos.

asus zenfone 3 ultra performance
We didn’t have any complaints with the Zenfone 3 Ultra’s general performance. Even though this chipset is not the fastest. But works well in partnership with the display. The phone never got too hot.

The screen ke kya kehne… Our complaints of low resolution while watching movies and YouTube clips also went away. The colors are very bright and the motion is also smooth. Viewing angles are around what Asus claims. We have only one complaint… Holding the phone in hand to watch long videos. The game runs smoothly. However, it was not easy to play for long periods without the use of both hands.

The sound was good too. The Zenfone 3 Ultra didn’t disappoint in the sound department due to its large body. Enjoy listening to music. And it is suitable for listening among small group of people. The quality of the earphones provided with the handset is quite good. Benchmark results were also decent.

Asus made many claims about the Zenfone 3 Ultra’s camera. The good news is that the claims turned out to be true to a large extent. Overall, the quality of pictures taken with the camera of Asus Zenfone 3 Ultra is very good. But it does not match the performance of other flagship smartphones in this price range. You will be happy with the autofocus performance of the camera. Framing is very easy. But due to poor grip, choosing an option and tapping for focus is not easy. Macros shots came out well. Photos taken at night were also bright and clean.

The battery of the Zenfone 3 Ultra is one of its most important features. We could use it for two days without charging. During this time we streamed videos several times over Wi-Fi and LTE, sometimes playing games and sometimes even using the camera. The screen consumes the most battery. The battery lasted for 10 hours and 19 minutes in our video loop test.

our decision
If you like big phones and have enough money to spend, the Zenfone 3 Ultra will be a good option. We have found that smartphones with this design are not meant for general use. But you might use it as a tablet that has the ability to make occasional voice calls with mobile data.

Overall the performance is also good. But it is not at the level of flagship devices of today. In such a situation, the company’s Zenfone 3 Deluxe model fits. The battery and display of this phone are useful things which are excellent in terms of entertainment. However, you have to think seriously about the pros and cons before buying it. Because you also have the option of low cost Fab 2 Plus and Mi Max, which give almost similar performance.
