Jio Phone Review

JioPhone has been one of the much-awaited phones this year. It is a 4G and VoLTE phone presented at the general annual meeting of Reliance Jio. The main reason for the craziness about the phone is effectively its being free. Customers will have to pay 1,500 rupees for this purchase, which will be returned after returning the phone after three years. Reliance Jio started pre-booking of this feature phone in the month of August and delivery of this phone was promised to start from the month of September.

Live phones cannot be placed in any particular category. It looks like a feature phone but it has many smart features due to which the phone gets a different identity. All apps of Jio work in this feature phone. You will be able to watch cinema and also stream songs. With this, free data is also being given in the tariff plan, so that you can use these services. These claims sound good, but how is the experience of using live phone? Let us tell you…

Reliance Jio phone design and design

The Jio phone is similar to a common feature phone in terms of design and feel. It comes with a small screen and numeric keypad. Everything is made of plastic and we will say that its quality is good. The weight is not very high and it fits easily in the hands. The grip of the phone is good in the hands due to the curved edges. It does not feel to be fat or heavy.
The screen is 2.4 inches and its resolution is 240x 320 pixels. Viewing angles are quite bad, but it will be considered reasonable according to the price. The bottom of the display has two function buttons, D paped, call and disconnect button and number pad. Above the screen is the VGA camera next to the earpiece. There is enough distance between each button and it is easy to reach them. Gives a feeling of being strong when you press the button.

There is nothing but a 2-megapixel primary camera and loudspeaker on the back of the phone. The back cover can be removed. And the 2000 mAh battery also comes out. Jio is a single SIM device and has a Nano SIM slot. You will get a separate slot for the microSD card. At the bottom there is a headphone socket with microUSB port. There is an LED flashlight on the top. This can be activated by long-pressing the up button on the D pad.

In the retail box, you will find a charger and micro-USB cable in addition to the Jio phone. Jio sim will already be given in the phone. It has to be activated before it can be used. We used an old Jio SIM with the phone. And it went on without any trouble. As expected, Airtel’s SIM did not work in it.

Reliance Jio phone specification and software

Jio phone is a feature phone but the specifications are worth noting. There is a dual core processor and 512 MB RAM has been provided with it. Inbuilt storage is 4 GB. Out of this, 1 GB is available for the user. 1 GB is reserved for apps and the rest will be used for storage software updates and app cache. Storage is not a concern, as you will be able to use a microSD card up to 128 GB. You will be able to transfer files from your phone to a personal computer via USB cable, all you have to do is to enable USB mode.

For connectivity, the Jio phone has Bluetooth and WiFi. With the help of Bluetooth, you will be able to transfer files to other phones. We were able to access the internet through a Wi-Fi router without any hassle. You do not get these connectivity features in feature phones. Because of this, Jio leads the rest in the phone race. 4G is VoLTE support. The phone rapidly connects to the Jio network. There is no hotspot feature, which means that those who want to consume the free data received every day from other devices will be disappointed.

We have received many questions about the operating system of JioPhone. For your information, let us know that the Jio phone runs on Kios. This is a customized version of Firefox OS. Reliance seems to have worked on improving the software. Because the Firefox OS supplied in Intex Cloud FX had a lot of drawbacks. The user interface is simple and easily understood. There is a grid style menu. App names and icons make them easy to identify. You cannot decorate these icons according to yourself. But you can definitely keep the favorite at the top. The Jio phone has an app store named Geostore, but nothing will be found here apart from Jio’s own apps.

The four buttons on the home screen also serve as shortcuts for launching apps. You will be able to access the Settings app, camera, message and inbuilt music player with these buttons. We could not use these buttons for the app of our choice. The alerts are in one place. These can be accessed via the function button on the left. The settings menu is well layed out and the options are easy to find. There is a feature of software update and OTA update will be available which is not common for feature phones. We hope that Reliance Jio will continue to add new features to the Jio phone through this.

The feature phone has geolocation which tells the location through GPS and Wi-Fi data. It is used for SOS emergency function. If the user presses the number 5 button for a long time, then the phone will send the SOS message with location coordinate. NFC has also been given for payments in the Jio phone, but it is not available yet. It is possible to enable it through the OTA update.

Some work features have been provided in the software. Whenever you type a number to dial, the name of the contact will automatically be found in the suggestion. If you wish, you will be able to make a video call by long pressing the call button. However, navigation is a bit slow. Do not expect smartphone level function from this. While dialing or typing a number, we found that the beeped voice from the keypad came after a while. This spoiled the experience, while in reality the keypad has no lag. After muting the phone, we were able to type faster.

Many Jio apps are pre-installed. You will find Jio apps like Jio Cinema, Geochat, Geomusic. Basic calculator, unit conversion, notes, FM radio, video player and gallery app are also provided. We were able to stream songs on Jio Music. Was able to watch television serials on JioTV and enjoyed cinema on Geomovie, that too without any trouble. Currently, this subscription is free for Jio phone buyers, which is a good thing.

Streaming videos are played in landscape mode in live apps. But the microSD card only played in portrait mode. In both cases, the experience of watching the video was very poor. In such a situation, the TV cable accessory will prove to be useful after being made available. The sound level is not easy to control, as no physical buttons are provided. This deficiency will knock you during media play or normal usage of the phone.

The phone also has a voice assistant named HalloGeo. This can be activated by long-pressing the dpad button. It understands basic commands. Such as calling a name, or opening an app. But it is slow. This is for those who are unaware of this technology.

Popular social media apps like Facebook and WhatsApp are not available in Jio Phone yet. It is reported that the company is working on it. You will get a web browser through which you will be able to take advantage of Facebook and other services. During the review, we were able to use Telegram messaging app on Jio Phone’s web browser. We also used YouTube as an experience which was fine. However, Hotstar and Amazon Prime Video Jio were not usable on the phone browser.

Reliance Jio Phone performance, camera and battery life

Even after sharing simple hardware and Kaios, you cannot expect cheap smartphone speed. The app will take time to load, but you will not be disappointed due to this. The hardware is so powerful that it can play full-HD video. You will be able to run only one app at a time. We also played some games on Geogames. Even though these games are very basic, they do not look bad. The performance of Jio apps depends on internet connectivity. Our phone received good 4G coverage during the review. Therefore, we had to wait for a few seconds for the streaming of songs or cinema. But in the coming time, the situation may change after millions of live phone users arrive.

There is a 2 megapixel camera without flash on the back of the phone. The VGA camera is on the front panel. Two cameras are a welcome step at this price. We do not have high expectations from these cameras. The camera app is very basic. You only get photos, videos and self-timer mode.

The resolution of the picture taken with a 2 megapixel rear camera is 1600×1200 pixels. Landscape shot lacks detail. It has too much noise. Close-up shots came out better than that. Photos are blurred each time due to motion. The performance of the camera during the night is very simple. For a good shot you will need a standing hand. Subjects are visible only when there is sufficient light. Hardly seen in low light. Photos look much better on the screen than the handset on screen. You can choose the resolution of your video. The resolution of a video of good quality will be 720×480 pixels. Quality is not very bad. It can be used. But don’t expect too much detail.

The resolution of the selfie is 640×480 pixels. In this also you will get the noise with the rear camera. It would be wrong to compare the Jio phone to today’s smartphone. Photos are blurred due to lack of adequate light or even moving hands. The selfie camera has the highest video resolution of 352×288 pixels. It is of no use to you.

We were desperate to know how much the Jio phone battery will run in general use? According to the feature phone, it comes with a large 2000 mAh battery. But it has features like Bluetooth, 4G, Wi-Fi and GPS which are known for battery consumption. After common use, we found that 80 percent of the battery remains even after 24 hours. The phone runs without charging for about 4 days.

After 15 minutes of continuous talk, we found that the battery was reduced by 2 per cent and by 5 per cent by talking for 30 minutes. This is a good performance in terms of 4G data connection. We also streamed the TV serial over the phone. Found that the battery decreased by 7 percent after watching a 30-minute episode. The same type of test on Wi-Fi connection saw a drop of 6 per cent. After not touching the phone even for about 12 hours, the battery was reduced by only 3%. You will also get a power saving mode that switches everything off to reduce power consumption.

Our decision

Jio Phone is not made for the smartphone user. This is for users who want to upgrade from a feature phone, but without spending much money. Apart from this, it is made to connect people of Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities to the Internet. Will Jio achieve the phone company’s goal? We will say that it has potential. Hardware enabled. Experience of using software is also good.

Free subscription of Jio apps makes this deal even more awesome. The ability of the OTA update indicates that more features may be available in the future. However, you should carefully read the ‘Conditions apply’ section on Jio’s website. Here the specifics related to the tariff plan and the conditions necessary to get a refund by returning the phone are mentioned. Apart from this, it is not easy to buy the phone. At the same time, what will be its performance after a long time? And how reliable is it? All these questions cannot be answered yet.

Let the user who wants to spend less to upgrade the phone, tell that the Jio phone is much better than its rivals. Looking at the feature, it can be called a smart feature phone. If you have been successful in booking it, you will not be disappointed.
