Redmi Note 7 Pro Review

Xiaomi has created a stir in the Indian smartphone market by launching Redmi Note 7 and Redmi Note 7 Pro. Redmi Note 7 Pro comes with more powerful specification. This Redmi handset is equipped with an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 processor, 48 megapixel camera, large battery and fast charging support. And all these features are part of a premium body. Looking at the price, it can be said that on paper no other phone can challenge the hardware of Redmi Note 7 Pro. Will this smartphone prove to be the best handset in its price segment on the basis of these hardware? We will try to find the answer to this question through the review of Redmi Note 7 Pro.

Redmi Note 7 Pro Design

The budget smartphones of the Redmi series are generally known for standard design language. But Redmi Note 7 Pro is very different. Xiaomi has used the premium glass sandwich design for this phone. It is very beautiful in appearance, strong as well. At first glance, this phone of Redmi sub-brand seems more expensive than its price, which is a good thing.
Both sides of the Redmi Note 7 Pro have Gorilla Glass 5 protection. Plastic rims are used on the edges. The sides of the glass rear panel are curved. For this reason the phone feels good in the hands. We reviewed the space black variant of the phone. In praise of this, we will say this much, it is fantastic in appearance. We liked the reflective finish. There is also a small Redmi logo on the back.

Now talk of deficiencies. Fingerprints fall easily on the phone. The spots are clearly visible in the black color variant. The rear cameras are raised. In recent times, such a wide camera has not been seen. Users of Redmi Note 7 Pro will have to compromise with these two drawbacks. The good thing is that these shortcomings can be overcome with Protective Cover. Redmi Note 7 Pro will also be available in Neptune Blue and Nebula Red colors. Both these phones are of metallic gradient design.

The protection of Gorilla Glass 5 builds trust to a great extent. Xiaomi has said that the edges of the Redmi Note 7 Pro are such that the screen breaks, providing protection.

The company says that the existing parts inside the Redmi Note 7 Pro come with the protection of liquid damage to some extent. This has become possible due to water tight seals and rubber insulation in the SIM tray, volume rocker and power button. The company has used P2i hydrophobic nano-coating.

It is worth noting that the Redmi Note 7 Pro has protection from water splashes. It is not water or dust resistant.

The fingerprint sensor is on the back. According to us, the volume buttons on the right side are a bit far away. It is difficult to reach them with one hand. Power and volume buttons have good feedback.

On the left side is the hybrid dual sim tray. That is, users have to choose one of the other SIM cards and microSD card. The phone has support for up to 256 GB microSD card. The 3.5mm headphone jack is at the top. It is also accompanied by an IR blaster. The speaker and USB Type-C port have got space at the bottom.

On the front is a 6.3-inch full-HD + (1080×2340 pixels) LTPS in-cell display, which is equipped with 19.5: 9 aspect ratios and 409 PPI pixel density. In Xiaomi’s words, there is ‘dot notch’ at the top.

Color reproduction of the display is good. Viewing angles will also be dated. Content is sharpened on the screen. However, we found that reflection occurs easily on the screen. In order to read on screen in direct sunlight, we had to keep the brightness level at 90 percent. You can control the color temperature and contrast of the display if you want.

It also has a reading mode that warms the color tone of the screen, so that it is easier to read.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 Pro cannot be called a small smartphone due to the 159.21 x 75.21 x 8.1 millimeter dimensions. Despite this, we liked the design and build quality. Accessing every part of the screen with one hand is not easy.

Overall, it will be said that the Redmi Note 7 Pro is one of the most beautiful looking handsets in its price segment. And it is also strong. In the retail box, you will also find a smartphone, protective cover, USB Type-C cable, 10 watt charger, SIM eject tool and some papers.

Redmi Note 7 Pro specification and software

Xiaomi has always been known to offer powerful hardware in affordable handsets. Redmi Note 7 Pro is also no different. You will find this type of hardware in more expensive devices. The smartphone uses the Octa-Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 processor.

There are two variants of this phone based on RAM and storage – 64 GB storage with 4 GB RAM and 128 GB storage with 6 GB RAM. The expensive variant is priced at Rs 16,999.

Inbuilt storage can be extended with up to 256 GB microSD card. But the hybrid SIM design means that you will have to sacrifice another SIM to increase storage. The phone comes with Widevine L1 certification. This means that users will be able to watch HD content on Amazon Prime Video and Netflix. Redmi Note 7 Pro is equipped with USB Type-C port, 3.5mm headphone jack, IR emitter, 4G LTE, dual-band Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.

Redmi Note 7 Pro will run on MIUI 10 based on Android 9 Pie. It has a February security patch. According to us, MIUI is a matter of choice. For those who upgrade from Xiaomi smartphone itself, the experience will be the same. But users using stock Android or any other skin can get confused with the MIUI.

Personalization options are revealed when you press the screen for a long time. Here wallpapers, apps, widgets, screen layouts and transition effects can be personalized. The user interface of Redmi Note 7 Pro is very smooth. You can enable gesture navigation if you want. But it was not that smooth.

MIUI comes with many unwanted apps. Redmi Note 7 Pro also suffers from this deficiency. Mi Browser, Mi Video, Mi Community and Mi Pay apps are already installed in the phone. Many third party apps are also available.

Third party apps can be uninstalled. But in-house apps are only possible to force stop. But it is also important to know the biggest drawback of MIUI. You will be disturbed by many unwanted advertisements.

By the way, MIUI also features many functions. If you want, you can set up gestures for many functions. With the help of adaptive battery, users can choose the apps that they do not want to run in the background. This will reduce battery consumption. You will also have the option to put some restrictions on background apps without shutting them down.

Redmi Note 7 Pro performance, camera and battery life

The Redmi Note 7 Pro uses the Octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 processor. This processor has been used in the expensive Vivo V15 Pro. We have no complaints about performance. Whether web browsing, or multi tasking. The phone runs smooth. Even though 10-12 apps are open in the background, switching between them is smooth.

Redmi Note 7 Pro proved itself as a capable performer in gaming too. Games with less powerful graphics run smooth. Games with powerful graphics like PUBG Mobile and Asphalt 9: Legends were also smooth. Both games ran on high graphics and default performance settings. But we received complaints of frame drop. This reduction was overcome when the graphics settings were medium. After this our gaming experience was excellent.

Even though Redmi Note 7 Pro plays smoothly in common use. But there are complaints about its heating. After playing PUBG Mobile or Modern Combat 5 for about an hour, the phone became very hot. Especially in the part with fingerprint sensor. The temperature of the phone had increased too much. Because of this we had to keep it idol for some time to keep the phone cool. We hope that Xiaomi will overcome this deficiency through future OTA updates.

Redmi Note 7 Pro works well in case of phone calls. Call quality was clean and clear. The rear fingerprint sensor is extremely fast and accurate. The Face Unlock feature also worked quickly. But it works a little slower in low light conditions.

During the launch of Redmi Note 7 Pro, Xiaomi had said a lot about its camera capability. The company had even compared it to the iPhone XS Max. Talking about the hardware, the Redmi Note 7 Pro has a 48 megapixel primary camera with F / 1.79 aperture, with Sony IMX586 sensor.

It has a 5 megapixel depth sensor. The camera is equipped with AI Portrait Mode, AI Studio Lightning, AI Dynamic, Slow-Mo Video Recording and 4k Video Capture. There is a 13-megapixel sensor for selfie on the front panel. It is equipped with AI Portrait Mode, AI Studio Lightning and AI Beautification.

Redmi Note 7 Pro works to take smartphone photography to another level in its price range. It captures photos with lots of detail, high dynamic range and excellent vibrancy. The device turns out to be the champion in the close up shot. Colors live panchi. Gradients were well reproduced in our sample shot.

At times, Colors came in excessively saturated in the context of enhancing contrast, and sometimes the background was underexposed. Has some drawbacks. But compared to other smartphones in this price range, Redmi Note 7 Pro captures much better quality photos.

Photos are captured at 12 megapixel resolution by default. Redmi Note 7 Pro uses a technique called pixel binding which collects data from four adjustable pixels to create a large pixel. If you want, you can manually capture 48 megapixel shot by choosing 48 megapixel mode.

48-megapixel shots capture more detail than the default 12-megapixel resolution shots. But they give a bit of dim and softening. On the other hand, 12 megapixel shots come with sharper, more vibrant and more depth. Apart from this, noises are more in the shot taken by 48 megapixel camera in low light.

The Redmi Note 7 Pro captures the best portrait shots. Edge detection is perfect. Especially in bokeh shots taken in the light of day.

Even in the night photography, Redmi Note 7 Pro surpasses its rivals. Night mode works to brighten photos taken at night. During this time, fine detail is also captured. However, we found that colors in night mode are not accurate due to increasing exposure and granny textures become part of the photo. It is worth noting that you will not be able to capture photos in 48 megapixel resolution in night mode.

The selfie taken from the 13 megapixel front camera is equipped with good color reproduction with sharpness. You also have many beautification features.

With Redmi Note 7 Pro you will be able to record full-HD and HD videos. Electronic image stabilization proves effective. However, 4K recording does not have EIS. With the front camera, you will be able to record full-HD video. But lack of stabilization causes video shaky records.

Redmi Note 7 Pro will be known for strong battery life. Even after a full day of use, it still has 15-20 percent battery left. In our HD Video Loop Test, the 4000 mAh battery died in 19 hours 23 minutes.

Redmi Note 7 Pro supports Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 4.0 technology. Sadly, the company has given a 10 W charger in the retail box. The 10 watt charger took 54 minutes to charge the Redmi Note 7 Pro from zero to 50 percent and 2 hours 14 minutes to charge 100 percent.

Our decision
The Redmi Note 7 Pro presents a very strong challenge in many cases. Eye-catching design, smooth performance, excellent cameras and strong battery life, these aspects prove to be a powerful handset. Due to the aggressive price, Xiaomi is sure to emerge as the champion of this phone.

This does not mean that there is no shortage of Redmi Note 7 Pro. The phone quickly heats up during gaming. MIUI distracts from advertising and fingerprints fall easily on the body.

In the price segment below Rs 20,000, Redmi Note 7 Pro will get the challenge of many handsets. For example, the Oppo K1 (review) comes with an in-display fingerprint casser and AMOLED display. In Samsung Galaxy A50 (Review) after spending a little more money, you will get triple rear camera setup, super amoled display and indisplay fingerprint sensor.

In Samsung Galaxy M30 (Review), you will get a third ultra-wide camera on the rear. Nokia 6.1 Plus (Review) is known for stock Android, smooth performance and great design. ZenFone Max Pro M2 (review) and Realme U1 (review) can also be considered in this price segment.

All these handsets offer a strong claim, but Redmi Note 7 Pro overtakes due to its look, camera, processor, battery life and price. In the end, we will say, Redmi Note 7 Pro is a powerful smartphone. It is possible that it will prove to be another champion phone of Xiaomi.
