Will the Xiaomi brand’s latest Redmi 7A smartphone be able to compete with its rival handset Realme C2 (Review) in the market? And is Redmi 7A the best option in this segment? To know the answer to these questions, we have reviewed the Redmi 7A, let’s know in detail about this latest smartphone of the Xiaomi brand.
Xiaomi Redmi 7A design
In the Redmi 7A, Xiaomi has given a clean unibody design instead of the low-cost redmi look. The Redmi 7A is slightly smaller than the Redmi 6A but its thickness is 9.5 millimeters. The Redmi 7A fits easily in the hand. The curved edge and matte finish on the back of the phone makes it feel good to hold the phone in your hand.
The back panel of the phone is made of thick polycarbonate and feels strong. We liked the matte finish quite a lot because the phone does not slip and there are no marks on it. The Xiaomi Redmi 7A has three color variants – matte blue, matte black, and matte gold. As per the name of the colors, the back of the phone comes with a matte finish. We have a matte blue color variant for review.
This phone is protected with nano-coating material to prevent sudden liquid splash but it is not IP-rated. With the Redmi 7A, the company is offering a two-year warranty. This is the first time Xiaomi has given a two-year guarantee with any of its Redmi models in India. We have no complaints with the look of the Redmi 7A that comes with a price of Rs 5,999.
If its rival handset Realme C2 is seen in the market, it is the geometric diamond-cut pattern on the back of the handset that makes it attractive. Speaker space has been changed in the Redmi 7A. Recall that the speaker of the Redmi 6A was located at the bottom of the rear panel, due to this, if the sound was slowed down when the phone was placed on a flat surface, but now the speaker in the Redmi 7A has a micro-USB port at the bottom of the phone Found a place together.
The power and volume buttons will be found on the right side of the phone, while on the left side of the phone there will be a slot to attach two nano SIMs and a microSD card. With the help of MicroSD card it is possible to increase the storage up to 256 GB. The option to increase the storage is quite good as the storage in the 16 GB storage variant of the phone gets filled up quite quickly.
Xiaomi Redmi 7A specifications and software
The Redmi 7A has been significantly upgraded. Redmi 7A has a 5.45-inch HD (720 × 1440 pixels) screen, with 18: 9 aspect ratios. The display is certified by TUV Rheinland, it reduces eye fatigue due to blue light emission. The Redmi 7A of the Redmi A sub-series uses an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 439 processor with eight ARM Cortex-A53 cores with a maximum speed of 2 GHz.
Recall that the quad-core MediaTek Helio A22 chipset was used in the Redmi 6A, in such a situation, the Redmi 7A has been upgraded. There are two variants of phones based on RAM and storage – 16 GB storage with 2 GB RAM and 32 GB storage with 2 GB RAM. We have 16 GB storage variants for review, in which 10 GB storage was already used.
After downloading some productivity, social media, benchmarking apps and some games in the phone, we found that the phone’s storage was almost full. If you are also thinking of buying its initial variants, then you will need a microSD card to increase storage. The camera hardware of the Redmi 7A has also been upgraded.
There is a 12 megapixel Sony IMX486 camera on the back of the phone, which is actually better than the 13 megapixels in the Redmi 6A. Sony IMX486 sensor was also used in Xiaomi’s Mi A2 (Review) handset, so good pictures can be expected. The handset will get a 5-megapixel selfie camera on the front panel of the phone with AI Face Unlock support.
There has also been a change in the battery of the Redmi 7A compared to the Redmi 6A. To make life in Redmi 7A, a 4,000 mAh battery has been given, which is 33 percent more capacity than the 3,000 mAh battery given in Redmi 6A. The retail box has a 10 watt charger, micro-USB cable, SIM eject tool.
Connectivity features include 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 b / g / n, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS / A-GPS, FM radio, Micro-USB and 3.5mm headphone jack. The length of the Redmi 7A is 146.30×70.41×9.55 millimeters and weighing 165 grams. Talking about the software, the Redmi 7A out of box runs on the MIUI 10 based on Android 9 Pie. Our review unit is running on the June Security Patch.
App drawer will not be found in the phone. After swiping up on the home screen, the Mi browser will open, while swiping to the left will show the installed apps in the phone. A swipe to the right will open a customizable shortcut page where you will see utility widgets, calendar events, app recommandations, Twitter comments etc.
Redmi 7A will get pre-installed in-house and many third party apps like Amazon, Facebook, WPS Office, Dailyhunt, Ludo Master, Paytm, Sharechat, Me Chat etc. We will also get to see ads in some pre-installed apps. To close these advertisements, I had to disable the Receive Reclamation option in the Mee Security app.
The MIUI 10 also has some handy features such as second space, this creates additional user profiles in the phone. Apart from this, dark mode, reading mode and dual apps etc. Navigation gestures or Quick Ball feature can be enabled to navigate in the UI.
Xiaomi Redmi 7A’s display and performance
The Redmi 7A display is an IPS panel that comes with HD + resolution. Its color reproduction is good and the content looks sharp. Viewing angle is also good. Brightness was not enough in the sunlight because there was some difficulty in reading the text on the display and watching the videos etc. easily.
The display is reflective and we find this dull in outdoor conditions. If it is compared to Reality C2, then its display is more vibrant. Users can change the temperature of the display in the Redmi 7A, as well as increase the contrast. Just like earlier the border was given on the top and bottom of the smartphone, the same is also given in the Redmi 7A. But you have to remember that this is an affordable smartphone.
As far as performance is concerned, the Redmi 7A is equal to most of its rival handsets and it runs smooth. It is an entry-level smartphone and given its price we cannot expect a Super Fluid Experience from it but it is a good phone. After using the phone throughout the day, we found that the apps run smooth but they require some time to open.
While switching between apps we noticed that the phone sometimes slowed down, especially when there were five to six apps running in the background. Sometimes even basic apps took a few seconds to load. With 2 GB RAM variants, multitasking will be smooth if you are not running games in the background. Common games such as Temple Run and Candy Crush continued without problems.
The PUBG Mobile Boy was on the default low graphics settings and we noticed that the phone slowed down and the frames also dropped. But even then the gameplay was better than other smartphones coming in this price segment.
Xiaomi Redmi 7A’s camera and battery life
The Redmi 7A has a 12-megapixel rear camera that takes crisp shots. Sharpness and colors were also captured well in the picture when there was enough light. Photos taken in daylight came out good. On seeing them on the big screen, you will notice shallow depth and weak dynamic range but at this price it is not surprising. Indoor and low light photos did not get much good as they lacked sharpness and grains were seen with noise.
The Redmi 7A captures vibrant macro shots with good sharpness in photos. If you like true-to-life colors, macro shots from the Redmi 7A will disappoint you. The phone struggles a bit to lock focus. There are many filters available in the camera app. Beauty mode has been given in Redmi 7A with five levels of beautification. We found that it makes the skin smooth and light. But by doing this the colors of the background element also fly away.
Portrait mode is also provided in Redmi 7A which blurs the background well. If it is compared to the Realme C2, then the extra depth sensor at the back of the phone helps in isolating and keeping the object in focus. Redmi 7A has a 5 megapixel selfie camera. In a selfie taken in daylight, we found that it lightens the skin color without any beautification filters, as well as a lack of sharpness in the background detail.
The phones look good on the phone’s screen but when zoomed in, they start showing grain. The selfie, taken in low light, lacked detail, as well as a hint of noise with weak color reproduction. The Redmi 7A can shoot 1080 resolution video at 30 frames per second. Overall, if we talk, Grain was seen in the video.
Redmi 7A managed to last the entire day even after common usage such as full day internet connectivity, social media usage, messaging, calling and 30 minutes of gaming. Not only this, about 30 percent battery was left in the phone till night. In our HD video loop test, Redmi 7A supported for 14 hours and 47 minutes. The 10 W charger that comes with the phone takes more than two hours to fully charge the phone.
The Redmi 7A has been significantly upgraded as compared to the Redmi 6A (Review), as well as has been greatly improved. It comes with better build quality. Given its price, the display is also good and the rear cameras of the phone also perform well in daylight. The battery life of the Redmi 7A is impressive and its performance is also notable. When the phone gets strained it slows down a bit but still its performance is comparable to the counterpart handset in this price segment. The selfie camera can be a bit disappointing and you will also find advertisements in the MIUI.
If you want to upgrade from a budget phone that is a few years old or if you are thinking of buying a phone to use the smartphone for the first time, then the Redmi 7A is a good option. In this price segment, the direct competition of Redmi 7A will be from Realme C2 (Review) in the market. However, if you want an additional camera for attractive design and better portrait shots, then Realme C2 is also a great option.
