Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro Review

Redmi Note 6 Pro has huge responsibilities. Xiaomi’s success formula is very simple. Beat your rivals by providing strong hardware at an affordable price. Now take Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro only. The price segment of Rs 15,000 has been dominating this phone. This was possible using Snapdragon 636 processor. This is probably the reason why fans of Xiaomi have similar expectations from Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro.

Taking no risk, Xiaomi has retained the Snapdragon 636 processor in this phone as well. But the Note 6 Pro is different due to the Nokia display and quad camera setup. Will the Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro smartphone be as successful as the Redmi Note 5 Pro? Let’s know …

Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro Design

In terms of design, Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro is very similar to Note 5 Pro. If you try to reverse the Xiaomi Mi A2, Redmi Note 5 Pro and Redmi Note 6 Pro, then you will not be able to easily differentiate between the three devices. The vertical dual rear camera setup on the back side is raised. LED flash has also got a place in the camera module. There is a metal backplate above the plastic frame of the smartphone.
However, from the front, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro seems to be the best, especially because of the notch in the top on the display. The notch of this phone is bigger than the notch of Redmi 6 Pro, which is Xiaomi’s first smartphone to come with the Nokia display in India.

Xiaomi has given the power and volume buttons on the right side. The power button is easy to reach. But accessing the volume button is not as easy. Feedback from all buttons is good. The top has a 3.5mm headphone jack, secondary microphone and IR emitter. Bottom has a micro USB port which was disappointing. Because many smartphones in this price range come with USB Type-C port, take Nokia 6.1 Plus and Motorola One Power as an example. There are grills on either side of the micro-USB port. The grill on the right has a speaker.

The phone has a hybrid dual sim tray on the left side. Xiaomi has made the phone curved on the back, so that the grip in the hands remains good. Weighing 182 grams does not cause discomfort to the hands. If you are thinking about weight then this is due to the large battery of 4000 mAh.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro specifications, software and features

Xiaomi has decided to use Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 processor in this phone. Remember that this processor has also been a part of Redmi Note 5 Pro. Nokia 6.1 Plus, Asus ZenFone Max Pro M1 and Motorola One Power also come with the same chipset.

Note 6 Pro has two variants – 64 GB storage with 4 GB RAM and 64 GB storage with 6 GB RAM. We have reviewed variants with 6 GB RAM. Hybrid SIM slot is given, i.e. you have to choose one of the microSD card and the other SIM. This phone comes with dual 4G VoLTE support.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro

Connectivity features of Redmi Note 6 Pro include Bluetooth 5, dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11 AC, GPS and FM radio. This phone has a Wi-Fi passthrough feature that allows the phone to work as a Wi-Fi repeater.

The phone has support for Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0, but Xiaomi has given a 10 W charger in the retail box. Like Xiaomi Poco F1, the Note 6 Pro has a water resistant P2i coating.

You will get MIUI 10 based on Android 8.1 Oreo in Redmi Note 6 Pro. Considering the availability of Android Pie in the market, we feel that Xiaomi could also offer Redmi Note 6 Pro with the latest Android version. Our review unit had a security patch for the month of October.

Some changes have been made to Xiaomi’s custom UI. The new multitasking layout seems fresh. Like other phones that come with the Nokia, you have the option to hide the Nokia. Xiaomi pre-installs your phone with many apps. Dailyhunt and Me Video repeatedly spammed our notifications.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro performance, battery life and cameras

Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro has worked without any lag. Probably 6 GB of RAM was an important contributor to this. Multitasking was easy. There was no need to close an app in the background. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 is not a very old processor. It is capable of running most apps and new games. We played the PUBG mobile game. It ran on the lowest settings. After playing the game for a while, the phone definitely gets hot.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro

The battery of Redmi Note 6 Pro is 4000 mAh. In our HD video loop test, the phone died after 15 hours and 36 minutes. This is 1 hour less than the performance of Redmi Note 5 Pro. In normal use, the battery easily lasts for more than a day. If you do not use the phone too much then you can expect a longer battery life.

Xiaomi has also made the 12 megapixel + 5 megapixel rear camera setup of the Redmi Note 5 Pro a part of the new phone. However, the 12 megapixel sensor is new and it comes with 1.4 micron pixel size and dual pixel autofocus. Its aperture is F / 1.9, which means that its camera will capture more light than the Redmi Note 5 Pro sensor. The secondary 5 megapixel depth sensor works to measure depth in portrait shots. The front panel has a 20-megapixel selfie camera and a 2-megapixel depth sensor.

These days the term artificial intelligence is used everywhere. Xiaomi claims that the camera app of the Redmi Note 6 Pro has AI scene detection. According to Xiaomi, the rear camera can identify 31 scenes using AI and the selfie camera can detect 12 scenes. Its camera app is similar to the camera app of other Xiaomi smartphones.

Landscape shots came with decent detail. The phone was successful in getting the right exposure. If you zoom in at 100 percent, then you will miss the lack of detail. Auto HDR is also available. It starts working automatically when it is needed. The Note 6 Pro surprised us with a macros shot. There was a good separation between the background and the subject. We also tested the AI camera. The phone was easily identifying the subject.

You can adjust the blur level even after taking a portrait photo. In low light, the phone tries to capture more light by reducing the shutter speed. In such a situation, the photos get blurred when the object is moved. If there is no light source nearby, the photos are not as sharp. The lack of detail is palpable.

With Redmi Note 6 Pro you will be able to record videos up to 1080 pixels. This is disappointing, as many phones in this price range come with 4K video recording capability. EIS has been given to stabilize the footage, but it brings with it a shimmering effect.

Our decision
Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro handset is an upgrade of Redmi Note 5 Pro. In fact it is only an upgrade in some cases. The notch display of the Note 6 Pro is larger and brighter. There is also a slight upgrade to the camera due to which the outputs are better. Xiaomi has worked to improve a good product. Now Xiaomi is facing a strong challenge in terms of hardware. There are handsets like Nokia 6.1 Plus, Asus ZenFone Max Pro M1 and Motorola One Power in the market in this price range.

Xiaomi recently cut the price of both variants of Redmi Note 5 Pro. These are now sold for Rs 13,999 and Rs 15,999 which is equal to the launch price of Redmi Note 6 Pro. The old phone is available right now, but according to us the Redmi Note 6 Pro is a better option.

Advertising has been a major problem in MIUI. But now the situation has become so bad that now there is a problem even in common use. With this, the MIUI 10 given in Redmi Note 6 Pro is based on Android 8.1 Oreo. That is, your software experience is also not the latest.

The price of the powerful version is such that Redmi Note 6 Pro will be challenged with handsets like Xiaomi Mi A2, Vivo V9 Pro and RealMe 2 Pro. All these three handsets come with a more powerful Snapdragon 660 processor. Considering the current price, we would suggest you to buy the initial variant of the Redmi Note 6 Pro. If you are considering expensive variants, then there are better options available in the market.

The new phone is once again likely to be the most popular in the price range of Rs 15,000 due to Xiaomi’s aggressive pricing. However, the higher RAM variant costs Rs 15,999, which is close to the stock Android running Xiaomi Mi A2. The challenge is also from Realme 2 Pro. Both these smartphones come with a more powerful Snapdragon 660 processor. Apart from this, there is also Motorola One Power (Power) which is equipped with 5000 mAh battery. Considering the current price, we would suggest you to buy the initial variant of the Redmi Note 6 Pro. If you are considering expensive variants, then there are better options available in the market.
